In the 1960′s the urban environment of major cities like New York were, in short, left to rot. White fight to the suburbans post-WW II created vacancies that were filled by racial & ethnic groups not embraced by mainstream society, government, & industry.
In many cases social & political action groups were formed to address the decay and lack of social services and investment in neighborhoods.
HOPE Community is a leading urban housing that rose in Spanish (East) Harlem. As you’ll see in our short documentary, home-grown housing development started with one project and mushroomed into building a housing organization that encompasses several multiple dwelling projects as a means for revitalizing a community once abandoned.

1st International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival
19 November 2011
Poet’s Den
309 East 108th Street
Spanish Harlem-New York, New York
Submissions: www.iprhff.com

DESCRIPTION:
Puerto Ricans in New York are like Mexicans to the Southwest. Puerto Ricans, Boricuas, “Nuyoricans”, are the first and largest Spanish speaking cultural community in NYC. It is through the sacrifices and achievements of Puerto Ricans that has made it possible for other Spanish-speaking groups arrive and establish their own communities in New York City.

Today, El Barrio (The Neighborhood) is known as being “la cuna” the cradle of the Puerto Rican community in the City and it is where they made their presence known to the world in the ways of culture, arts, civic mindedness, politics, and economics. The self awareness of being a part of a larger group serves as a catalyst not only to welcome other Spanish-speaking cultures to the neighborhood, Mexicans, Dominicans, Central & South Americans, as well as other ethnic minorities but to continue the legacy of the southern American continent, hemisphere, & Caribbean to the area.

The First Annual International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival acknowledges the presence & contributions Puerto Ricans, as Latin@s, in Spanish (East) Harlem. It seeks to educate our audience on the richness of the Puerto Rican community; what Puerto Rican culture and identity is about and how it is expressed in every facet of life and the arts. It is with a sense of purpose and urgency that the creation, development, and mission of the festival are to crave out an enclave of Latinos in “Spanish Harlem” and give tribute to Puerto Ricans.

MISSION:
The mission of the International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival is to recognize the Puerto Rican community’s place in the history of the City of New York as its first and largest Spanish-speaking group to migrate & settle and who made it possible of other Caribbean & Latin Americans to do the same. The festival also seeks to display and maintain the richness of Puerto Rican cultural traditions, creative expressions, and contributions to the welfare and growth of the United States.

Lastly, the International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival’s mission is to encourage narrative and documentary film making for the purposes of archiving the continuous presence, development, and contributions of Puerto Ricans, our culture, our tradition, our creative (collective & individual) thought, and contribution to the social fabric of the global community.
